How to migrate from Tally to AskBooks in 5 minutes

Apr 10, 2026 8 min readBy AskBooks team

Switching from Tally feels intimidating — years of data, custom voucher classes, opening balances. We've made it a 5-minute job. Here's exactly how.

Why migrate?

  • Cloud-native — access your books from any device, any location
  • Multi-user, real-time — no more passing the dongle around
  • GST-aware — GSTR-1, 3B, and 2B reconciliation built in
  • WhatsApp invoices — send to customers in one tap
  • DPDPA-ready — encryption, audit logs, data residency

What gets imported automatically

  1. Ledgers — chart of accounts with groupings preserved
  2. Vouchers — sales, purchase, payment, receipt, journal, contra
  3. Stock items — items, units, godowns, batches
  4. Opening balances — as on your migration date
  5. Parties — customers, vendors, with GSTINs
  6. Tax masters — GST rates and HSN codes

Step-by-step

1. Export from Tally

In Tally Prime, open your company → Gateway of Tally → Display → List of Accounts → Print → Export → XML. Save the file (typically 2-50 MB).

2. Upload to AskBooks

Sign in, go to Settings → Import → Tally XML. Drag and drop your XML file. Our parser handles Tally Prime, ERP 9, and even Tally 7.2.

3. Preview the migration

You'll see a clear summary: 1,247 ledgers, 8,401 vouchers, 312 stock items. Any conflicts (duplicate names, missing parents, unmapped tax classes) are flagged in red. Review before committing.

4. Resolve conflicts

Click each red row to fix inline — usually 5-10 items max. Common ones: ledger names with special characters, GSTINs in invalid format, stock items with no unit.

5. Commit

Hit Commit migration. We snapshot your existing AskBooks tenant first (so you can roll back), then apply the import. Done.

Common gotchas

  • Unmapped ledgers — ledgers with non-standard groupings get parked under a holding account. Reassign post-import.
  • Currency — Tally allows mixed currencies per voucher; AskBooks normalizes everything to your base currency.
  • Date format — Tally's DD-MM-YYYY is auto-detected, but verify a few entries.
  • Custom voucher classes — these don't map 1:1. We import vouchers but you may need to recreate the class on the AskBooks side.
  • Cost centres — fully supported in Pro+, ignored in Khata.

What stays manual

  • Print formats / invoice templates
  • User permissions and security levels
  • Inventory revaluation rules
  • Bank reconciliation history older than 12 months
